Birdwoods features a wide range of textiles, homewares, African decorative arts and work by New Zeland and local Hawke’s Bay artists.
- Textiles and Mud Cloths – these gorgeous traditional hand woven and printed fabrics from Northern Africa – many with beaded trims – can be used in almost any manner – as table cloths and runners, wall hangings, throws, or even as a shawl.
- Bead and Wire Work – from a tiny beetle to a man on a bicycle, mobiles, Christmas decorations and key rings, we stock a fascinating collection of African wire and bead work.
- Woven Wire Baskets – with a wonderful range of colours and sizes, Birdwoods always has a selection of these funky and stylish baskets made from telephone wire.
- Jewellery - explore our range of Ethiopian silver and trade bead jewellery as well as some ancient and amazing pieces from Iran (Persia). We also stock a large selection of Sababa jewellery featuring beautiful semi-precious stones, turquoise and other beads and made from pewter and silver.
- Wooden Homewares – from the ever-useful wooden spoon to salad servers and bowls and platters – we have something that will look good in every home.
- Carved Stone Ornaments – beautiful solid stone decorative water bowls, animals, eggs, dishes – tactile and everlasting.
- Furniture – we stock a small range of African teak furniture, antique stools, and classic herdsman stools.
- Basketware – Zimbabwe is famous for its amazing range of natural fibre woven bowls and we stock many lovely examples.
- Paintings, prints and cards – we have an eclectic range of artworks - from Harare's street artists through to some of Africa's best known wildlife painters, along with prints and gift cards.
Birdwoods Gallery also features a range of African furniture and homewares from specialist importer Afrique. These include beautifully tanned hides including kudu, nyala antelope, zebra, nguni (African cattle), wildebeest, and springbok - all certified by CITES (Certificate of International Trade in Endangered Species). Along with the full hides, there are also ottomans, lampshades and cushion covers made from the skins, as well as a range of lamp shades and lamps made from porcupine quills and guinea fowl and red pheasant feathers.
Local New Zealand artists are also well-represented at Birdwoods with works including ceramics, jewellery, prints and paintings. We have regular exhibitions and special events - check out our Events and News page for further details.
